Reviews
From The Davis Enterprise/Winters Express - 1999
Bob Malone
Delta Moon; #PDP1060
Davis' resident folk guru, Dave Nachmanoff, chooses his friends wisely...and we the townsfolk are the beneficiaries.
Twice now Mr. Malone has graced the Palms with his talent, and those of you lucky enough to have experienced him know just what a treat it is to hear this piano man on the keyboard.
If I had to pitch him to the Hollywood types (which, if his songs are an indication, he seems to loathe), I'd say: a '90's Randy Newman, only with charm, style, charisma and more talent. You've got to admit that Newman is definitely one of those people who fooled most of the people most of the time, no?
Malone's boogie-woogie blues stylings are well represented in his recent self-titled CD. Filled with bristling vocals and screeching horns, Malone covers everything from dysfunctional relationships and life on the road to smog.
The disc itself tends to run a bit slower than his live set, and lacks a bit of the energetic spontaneity that he uses to instantly win over his audience. Still. it's a nice addition to place on your shelves next to other artists who've come from regular engagements at L.A.'s House Of Blues (where Malone frequently frequents).
Monster chops and a keen sense of timing will insure Malone a lifelong career in the music business, and I suspect it's just a matter of time before his 15 minutes turns into several hours. In the meantime, please keep your eye on the schedule for his next appearance...you won't be disappointed.
