From PLAYLIST: "Acoustic Eclectic" - 2000

PLAYLIST: "Acoustic Eclectic" - Bob Malone

Monday, June 26, 2000, 7-9 PM

This week's show featured the return of Bob Malone, an incredible singer, songwriter, and piano player who made his first visit to WDIY just over a year ago. In fact, one of the songs he played during that first visit was so captivating that it ended up on WDIY's new "Studio Sessions Volume 1" compilation CD, so it was great to have him back in the studio again with some fresh new material.

Bob arrived early for the live broadcast, and lazily chatted with me in the studio before we went on the air. He seemed tired and strangely quiet, and he was staring absently out the window as I warned, "thirty seconds." But the moment the on-air light went on, he leapt to the piano bench and exploded into a fiery rendition of one of his most popular tunes, a smug and clever cheatin' song in which he sings, "I know that he's your husband -- but he don't know that I'm your man." Now completely energized, he went on to play a few songs from his forthcoming album (due for completion in the fall). He played "Valentine's Day," a song he had written for the occasion and played to his girlfriend by telephone from the stage at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe, then "Like It or Not," which he describes as "song number 68 in a series of dysfunctional relationship songs."

Bob's music contains a lot of blues and jazz influences, but he draws upon many musical traditions. "My mission," he says, "is to break down all musical boundaries," and he demonstrates his diversity with a quick sample of Beethoven. He's a songwriter, but he's also recorded songs by Bob Dylan, Loudon Wainwright, and John Hiatt. His new album, he says, will have one cover on it - a song by George Wurzbach called "Einstein" that he performed as we wrapped up our visit.
