October 1998
Freight & Salvage With The Nach

Citizens of the People's Republic of Berkeley:
It all began like this: first, when everybody lived in California and nobody lived anywhere else, there was just me and Dave Nachmanoff and The Freight & Salvage. Dave and I had heard of each other but had never met and we both had heard of the Freight – it being a kind of Holy Grail of the acoustic music circuit – but had never played there. Then, as fate and the road would have it, our paths eventually crossed and we became good friends, and as our status as musicians (however dubious) grew, we both found ourselves playing the coveted Freight & Salvage gig from time to time (never at the same time, however), opening for various people. I learned to tolerate Dave's obsessive, unexplainable need to have a bagel in the morning before he can function in any kind of useful manner. Dave learned to tolerate my compulsion to drink all the beer in his fridge every time I visit his house. Then, as fate would further have it, we discovered that we were both releasing a new CD on the same day (that was back in July). We both did our respective CD release parties in our respective hometowns and then spent the rest of the summer on the road. Sometime during this harrowing maelstrom of McDonald's days and Motel 6 nights, we each got a call from The Freight requesting our presence there on the same night, just when we were wondering where we were going to have our record release parties in the Bay Area. How convenient.
So, both Dave and I are very pleased to announce that on October 7, 1998, at 8:00pm, we will be having our Bay Area CD Release Party at the legendary Freight & Salvage in Berkeley. Now, while I'm sure you all find this so exciting that you're probably shaking uncontrollably with joy, your rational minds are telling you a couple of sobering facts:
a. This show is on a Wednesday.
b. It costs $11.50 to get in.
Now, while these things may indeed be inconveniences, they should in no way deter you from attending this gala event. First of all, this is a rare chance to see us play together at this great venue. Second of all, if you don't come, it will also be your last chance to see us at this great venue because club bookers don't generally like to book acts that don't draw a crowd. We are, after all, living in a capitalist society. Also, if you are a fan of one of us, but don't know anything about the other, this is our chance to introduce each other to you, which we are very pleased to do. Lastly, if this show is poorly attended, it will almost certainly be the starting point of a tragic downward spiral in both of our lives which will most likely culminate in both of us giving up music and taking jobs which will involve constant repetition of the phrase "would you like fries with that?" You don't want that guilt resting on your shoulders. So, we hope very much to see you on October 7th …
Love, Bob
