Do You Miss New York?

Yo:

Well, it's hard to believe, but we're already at the end of the first month of living well beyond our means in New York City. From the six dollar beers at the cozy local tavern around the corner to the fourteen dollar cheeseburger at the little hole in the wall joint down the street, no city sucks the cash out of your pocket quite like this one! But in spite of the sticker-shock, it sure has been worth it. Last night, we walked across the street to Lincoln Center and saw Ray Charles at Avery Fisher Hall. It was a religious experience. By the time Ray got around to singing "Just for a Thrill" (from The Genius Of Ray Charles album, buy it if ya ain't got it already), I was nearly reduced to writhing on the floor and speaking in tongues. Brother Ray is still the man. Today, we just bopped around Central Park, and were rewarded with the hours of free entertainment one can always find there. Of course, I already told you about my pastrami experience.

As you can see, I will be all over New England and New York State this month. In addition, there will also be this summer's second installment of "No Guitar Night" with George Wurzbach, whom some consider my evil musical twin. If you missed our June show: don't let it happen again! I'll be using a band for my solo portion of the show, as well as playing in the round with George. This month's band gigs reunite me with Chris Landi, who was the original Malone Band bass player ten years ago when I first moved to L.A. He hated L.A. (ah, don't we all), and moved back home to Long Island seven years ago, and that was the last I saw of him. Until now. The culmination of all this July activity will be our show at the Winterhawk Bluegrass & Beyond Festival. The "beyond" part of that is, of course, where I come in. We'll have the full horn section, background singers, the whole deal. We play Friday night, the opening night of the fest – it should be a fine evening. Other performers at the fest include the great Boozoo Chavis, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Commander Cody…and that's just the tip of that proverbial iceberg. Gotta go now, I'm almost out of money, so I'm gonna head on down to Gray's Papaya for the two-hot-dogs-and-a-papaya-drink-for-a-buck-ninety-eight-special. Could be the greatest bargain in New York: I might even have enough dough left over for a six pack...

Love, Bob
